North Potomac, founded in 1988, is north of Washington D.C. It was initially part of Gaithersburg. The area is defined by the Muddy Branch and Rich Branch rivers and includes many parks and trails along its banks. Entertainment and shopping can be found in the nearby surrounding towns giving you space from the abundant activity in the city and a more relaxing experience.
 
North Potomac is primarily a residential area with single-family housing. Homes in the area range from Colonial-style dwellings to split-level homes. Most homes are in neighborhoods with ample yard space and include older homes and new construction.

North Potomac is a suburban town with excellent schools and a focus on family and children. It’s a short drive to Washington D.C., and Gaithersburg is nearby for shopping and entertainment. In addition, the family-oriented atmosphere of the town creates the perfect place for children to thrive.

North Potomac is close to everything, and you can find great dining, shopping, and entertainment nearby. Downtown Gaithersburg has a fantastic selection of shops and restaurants, including Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar. The restaurant focuses on Central and South American flavors along with inspiration from the Caribbean. They carry over 100 different rums from around the world that you can enjoy with your meal. Dining options include grain bowls, tacos, soups, and salads. The atmosphere is casual with a modern Caribbean feel.
 
In nearby Potomac, you will find Vie de France, a bakery and cafe located in the Potomac Place shopping mall. This small and cozy bakery serves impressive pastries and soups, great coffee, and cappuccino. Also in Potomac, the Tally Ho Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is the perfect spot for a family outing.
 
For a luxurious dining experience, Hunter’s Bar and Grill is known for its great atmosphere and food. Once called the Hunter’s Inn, in 2002 two brothers purchased it and changed the name in 2014 to better reflect the updated menu and atmosphere. They serve fresh fish and comfort food and have a large selection of wine and cocktails
 
Another excellent dining experience in Potomac is Lock 72. It is a casual upscale eatery that focuses on freshly made from scratch food that comforts and satisfies. Local favorites include pan-seared jumbo lump crab cake and crispy pork shank.
 

Things to Do

The North Potomac area has an abundance of things to do, including festivals, parks, and other community events. In nearby Fredrick, the Caribbean Wine & Music Festival is one of the longest-running festivals on the Atlantic coast. With a focus on the Caribbean, you can experience the sounds of the steel drum and Reggae while enjoying wine from the festival creators, Linganore Wine Cellars. The festival also includes various Caribbean-inspired food, jewelry, and art.
 
In nearby Columbia and North Bethesda, Cinco de Mayo Taco & Tequila Festivals celebrate Mexican heritage and provide an authentic experience with music, food, dancing, and other events.
 
Gaithersburg hosts a Lobster Bake Day Festival, a family fun festival at Smokey Glen Farm that celebrates seafood. Dining options include shrimp, lobster, seafood bisque, and corn on the cob. Chicken and Kielbasa sausage are also on the menu. In addition to a large selection of food, the festival has family-friendly activities and music.
 
North Potomac is home to many parks and trails. The Muddy Branch Greenway Trail is a favorite of locals for hiking, walking, and horseback riding. The Potomac Horse Center and the Blackhouse Point Conservation Park are located along the trail giving hikers a place to stop and enjoy some time off the trail. Another nearby park located in Gaithersburg features play equipment and a dog park along with walking paths and open spaces.
